EXECUTIVE TRANSITION AT THE INITIATIVE FOR EQUAL RIGHTS (TIERs)

2nd February 2021

TIERs is excited to announce the appointment of Omolara Oriye as its new Executive Director. Omolara has a long history with TIERs and has served as the Director of Human Rights and Advocacy at TIERs for 3 years, acting Executive Director in 2018, before taking an academic sabbatical to study for a master’s degree in “Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa”.

Omolara is a human rights lawyer, activist and feminist legal researcher. She has worked to advocate for access to justice for women and LGBT+ persons in Nigeria. Her work as a feminist legal researcher dwells on feminist legal theory with a particular focus on feminist constitutionalism.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication from Kogi State University, a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Buckingham, and a master’s degree in Human Rights and Democratisation from the University of Pretoria. Omolara brings to this role a vast knowledge of, and experience working in the women’s Human Rights, LGBT+ Advocacy and human rights education space in Nigeria and Africa.

Omolara will be taking over from Xeenarh Mohammed, who joined TIERs as the Executive Director in May 2018 to help usher in a new strategic plan, build new and important strategic partnerships with local and international partners, and help improve and stabilise operations and organisational processes. As Xeenarh leaves TIERs to take care of her health, we sincerely thank her for her exemplary contribution and leadership in her time with us. The Board and Staff wish her the best of luck and opportunities in her future endeavours.

We are confident that Omolara’s many skills, collaborative and engaging leadership approach and wide-ranging experience will fit into our goals of creating a society where human rights are guaranteed regardless of status, identity, orientation and affiliation.

Please join us in welcoming Omolara into this exciting new chapter at TIERs.

Signed:
