TIERs announce the establishment of the LGBT Legal Response Fund

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: May 10, 2016

The Initiative for Equal Rights  (TIERs) is pleased to announce the establishment of the LGBT Legal Response Fund (the “Fund”) to support LGBT persons litigating human rights violations experienced in relation to their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. The Fund will also provide funding to lawyers, organizations and activists who have received SOGI-based cases that require litigation or any equivalent legal response.

The Fund will support cases that have explored Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms but ultimately require litigation. Furthermore, the Fund will support strategic litigation in Nigeria around the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2013 through collaborative work with human rights organizations, activists and legal practitioners.

Expenses that will be covered by the Fund include, but is not limited to, litigation related costs, court-ordered bail bonds and official court expenses, and other litigation-related expenses during a litigation process.

Through this initiative, TIERs hopes to encourage the advancement of sexual rights, and particularly the recognition of the rights of LGBT persons, through an exploration of the Nigerian legal system.

Application forms for the Fund are available for download via: LRF Application Form
